Award-winning author, Kate Mosse, will be at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds later this month, marking the 20th anniversary of her hit mystery novel, Labyrinth.
First published by in 2005, Labyrinth quickly became an international phenomenon, translated into 37 languages and selling around 8 million copies.
The story follows Dr Alice Tanner, who works as a volunteer at an archaeological site in France. She discovers two skeletons in a hidden cave and is puzzled by some carvings on the walls and the representation of a labyrinth. When she notices the same symbol on a ring found in the cave, Alice has an uneasy feeling that she has disturbed something that was meant to remain hidden. Later, she discovers that the mystery has a connection to her family and ancient books containing secrets of the Holy Grail.
Now, Kate is on tour with Labyrinth Live: Unlocking the Secrets of the Labyrinth - an atmospheric theatre show which guides audiences through her inspirations behind the story, how the novel took shape, how the characters came to life, and some of the pictures from the filming of the Labyrinth mini-series. In addition, she’ll shine a spotlight on the real history that underpins the novel: the Grail hunters and Grail legends; the history of the Cathars; about labyrinths themselves; about hieroglyphs and ancient Egypt, and the links between those ancient religions and the Cathar religion.
Kate explains: “I write to entertain, and I perform to entertain, so more than anything, I hope that the audience have a brilliant night out! Beyond that, I’d like them to have a strong sense of how women’s stories are part of history too, and how that matters. I’d like them to be thinking about the persecution of the Cathars, and the tragic ways in which history repeats itself through the generations. I’d love them to be thinking about mystery and folklore, history and legend. I also want people to also come out buzzing with the joy of history and knowing that storytelling is the thing that brings us all together.”
Kate Mosse will be ‘Unlocking the Secrets of the Labyrinth’ at The Apex on Sunday, March 30.
