Sleeping Beauty

Guest review by Georgy Jamieson at Suffolk Theatre

Beautiful princesses, handsome princes, a comedy sidekick, fire breathing dragons, a man hungry panto dame, dancing henchmen and fairies both good and bad – Sleeping Beauty at the Ipswich Regent has them all.

It’s the eve of Princess Aurora’s 18th birthday and she must be kept away from any spinning wheels in the Kingdom of Slumberland at all costs. Many years ago the wicked fairy was left out of the Christening celebrations so cast a spell, which said if the princess pricks her finger she will die, and the wicked fairy will go to any lengths to get her revenge

Vicki Michelle, of ‘Allo ‘Allo fame, is suitably evil as the wicked Fairy Carabosse, with her two henchmen, Britain’s Got Talent’s Twist and Pulse, who treat us to their signature moves, along with Mike McClean playing Muddles - returning to an appreciative Ipswich crowd who have seen him in many pantos before.

Gavin Ashberry is a fun and popular Dame Queen Camilla in lavish costumes, and Jazzy Phoenix (Nadine from Eastenders) a charming Princess Aurora. Al Jenks is the guitar playing love interest Prince Sheeran and Freya Karlettis is an energetic Fairy Forty Winks.

There’s also some great support from the pro dancers and various teams of local young dancers too, and all the colour you’d expect from the set and costumes to make a panto sparkle.

I won’t spoil the surprise but you’ll be given 3-D glasses when you arrive so watch out for some spooky fun in the second half!

It’s a riot!

Final words from Frankie, aged 7 years

Favourite character: Princess Aurora

Funniest character: I thought that Muddles was the funniest

Funniest moment: The bottom jokes and twerking. I also liked the Superman bit because it went a bit wrong which was really funny

Favourite bit of panto: The 3D Ghostbusters scene (Note: Nanny said she was still singing the morning after!)

Final words: I really want to see it again! Can we come again? Can we book for next year, please?
