Romeo and Juliet
Review by Martine Silkstone
It's an ambitious production - a classic Shakespeare play, 100 minutes, six actors, four of whom are playing multiple roles, simple staging and modern dress. For this review, it was also the livestream as I couldn't get to the theatre, so all sorts of things could have gone wrong with sound, picture, angles etc. Throw in the fact that, despite being a huge Shakespeare fan, Romeo and Juliet is not one of my favourites, and you have one slightly sceptical reviewer going into this experience.
However, I am pleased to say that within a few short lines, I knew I could relax - all was well.
Directed by Douglas Rintoul, this contemporary production is pared back, fast paced and wonderfully dynamic. The scenery is minimal but effective, the costumes modern and simple, the lighting subtle - all of which allows the well-known text to be at the fore.
Of course, this puts all the emphasis on the actors and their ability to engage the audience and carry the story through - and they didn't disappoint. The talented cast gave a smooth, professional performance, some switching roles with astonishing ease despite the intense dialogue.
Special mention should be made of Ciaran Forde (Capulet, Prince, Apothecary) and Benjamin Prudence (Paris/Mercutio/Balthasar), who did some of the best 'drunk' acting I've seen - hic!
But, it has to be said, the stand out performance was definitely from Tom Casey as Romeo. As a Shakespearian actor he excels, speaking his part with a passion and clarity that feels truly natural and allows the audience to just sit back and drink in the beautiful words.
Bravo!
I also cannot speak highly enough of the live streaming service from New Wolsey Theatre. So easy to access - a link via email, live from 45 minutes before the show to test your connection, and clear instructions on how to connect to your TV - with great sound and a mixture of camera angles to maximise impact. I would always choose to be at the theatre if at all possible, but this is an excellent option for anyone who cannot attend in person. Something to look out for when it comes to future shows.
Sadly, Romeo and Juliet has now finished its run at New Wolsey Theatre.
But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the west, and Theatre Royal is the venue…
Romeo and Juliet is at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds from 13 - 17 February 2024.
